Boston Bar Association is established.

February 26, 1876

It is founded 37 of the city’s top lawyers at meeting in Boston Superior Court. A reconstitution of the Suffolk Country Bar Association, its goals are “to promote social intercourse among the members of the bar; to insure conformity to a high standard of professional duty; and to make the practice of the law efficient in the administration of justice.” Sidney Bartlett is the first president. The organization begins with 225 members. It opens its first permanent headquarters in the Parker House in June 1927, moves to 21 School Street in 1941, to 39 Court Street in 1942, and to its current location at 16 Beacon Street in 1962.
